CANCARE

CANCARE

DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY

Today, cancer is a common household word, with each of us closely associated with at least one near and dear one, a family member or a friend, a neighbor or a colleague, diagnosed with cancer. In India, there is also a perception that cancer incidence is on the increase; and a hope that perhaps with the advances in technology, cancer is diagnosed more frequently, maybe a change in our attitude and approach, the myths associated with cancer are vanishing and we are more open to accepting cancer diagnosis and discussing cancer more openly. As per Indian population census data, the rate of mortality due to cancer in India was high and alarming with about 806000 existing cases by the end of the last century. Cancer is the second most common disease in India responsible for maximum mortality with about 0.3 million deaths per year. According to Boston Consulting Group Study, 60-80% cancer cases in India are diagnosed late and 60% patients do not have access to quality treatment. For most patients in India, there is no insurance cover and treatment cost out of reach .Thus delivery of equitable, quality and affordable cancer care in India is a big challenge.

In order to make an awareness of this condition among students, another club CAN CARE was initiated by the department. The club was inauagurated by Dr. V .P. Gangadharan, Medical Oncologist, Lakeshore Hospital, Cochin, leading oncologist of Kerala. All the students of the present of B.Sc. & M.Sc. Zoology and the entire faculty are members of the CANCARE.
