Overview

The Malayalam department was initiated in the year 1955, along with the establishment of the institution. Mrs. A.Ammalukutty headed the department in the initial years. In the later years, Ms.V.Sumathi, Ms.K.K Radha and Ms.R.Remadevi extended service to the department. Intermediate classes were engaged by our department until 1960. In the year 1960 with the commencement of Degree courses the language studies was extended to the UG level. In the year 1962 Sister Carmel, a former student of this college, and Sister Josepha joined here as lecturers. Sister Carmel became the Head of the Department. In the year 1977, Ms.Molly Joseph Mampilly joined the department as a lecturer. In 1980, Sr Carmel transferred to the newly started Sacred Heart College at Chalakudy. In the year 1981, Dr.Leena M.A. was appointed as lecturer the department. From 1980 to 1993, Sr Josepha served the Department as HOD  and in the last years of her service, she became the Vice Principal of the college. On March 31st 1993 Sr Josepha retired from the service and Dr. Molly Joseph Mampilly  became the head of the department. During the period of her service Malayalam department uplifted to P G  Department. On March 31st 2010 Dr. Molly Joseph Mampilly retired from the service and Sheeba A.C. appointed as Asst. Professor in the Department. Dr Leena M.A. became the head of the department in the year 2010. During this period P.G Malayalam Programme was regularized and Vineetha George, Shaijy C. Muringathery, Starlet Mathew and Annam Sini A.P. were appointed as Assistant professors in the year 2011. In the year 2012 Ms.Starlet Mathew transferred to BKM  College at Amalagiri. In the same year Sobhitha Joy and Justin P.G. (Sanskrit) were appointed. On March 31st 2013 Dr. Leena M.A. retired from the service and Sheeba A.C. became the head of the department. In the year 2018 P.G. Department of Malayalam was uplifted to Research Department. Dr. Sheeba A.C., Dr. Shaijy C. Muringathery, Dr. Annam Sini A.P. and Dr. Sobhitha Joy became research Guides. On 11th October 2019 1st RAC was conducted and 6 research scholars were admitted for Ph. D. Programme.  In the year 2019 December Dr. Roy Mathew M were appointed as  assistant professor and in 2021 July he became research Guide. On 2021 November Dr. Sobhitha Joy resigned from here and  join Newman's College Thodupuzha. On 2022-2023 Academic year 7 research scholars were admitted for Ph. D. Programme. On March 31st 2022 Dr. Sheeba A.C. retired from the service and Dr.Vineetha George became the head of the department  and on June 2022 she became research Guide.

Curricular and extra curricular activities of the department opened a wide horizon of various dimensions of knowledge and enabled our students being equipped in professions like Teaching, Journalism, Media works, Lexicographic and Translation works. Ample opportunities exist for even those who are interested in folk art and culture. 

          After the regularization of P.G. Malayalam Course  in the year 2010 the department was lead to new horizons by the appointment of five new faculties and various infra structured facilities like research oriented library modern technical equipment like desktop, laptop, LCD projector ,camera, tape recorder etc. We were able to produce 100 percentage result in the university  examination. In the year 2012 our student Ursula N. won KERALA PANINI AWARD for being the top scorer in the inter university Examinations and received merit scholarship. 30 of our old students National Eligibility Test (NET)  and 10 of them were qualified in the State level Educational Test (SET). Along with academic excellence we take almost care to inculcate social cultural and human values among the students . Our department prepare a wonderful platform for the students for the overall development of literary and artistic talents of our students. We also empowers our students to face all the challenges of their day today life by giving them counselling, enrichment and empowerment programmes to become the most powerful women community of our nation.

MA  Malayalam

 In the academic year 1999-2000, Malayalam Department established as PG department by introducing PG programme in Malayalam. There are 10 seats allotted for the PG Programme in the beginning. Later it was increased to 20 seats. The formal inauguration of the PG Malayalam Course was done by the Respected Vice Chancellor of the Calicut University, Dr. K K N Kurup on (January 2000) at 10am in the college auditorium. In his inaugural address, he insisted the importance of the language studies in the college curriculum. He also pointed out the facts that the study of oriental languages, especially the mother tongue and its literature, enrich our culture and promote best human relationships in this scientific era.

  Dr. M. Leelavathy [Rtd.Professor from Maharaja’s College Eranakulam and a well known critic in Malayalam] and Prof. Narayana Menon [Rtd. Professor from Sree Kerala Varma College Guruvayoor and renowned scholar in ancient literature and Malayalam Grammar] were appointed as Guest Lecturers for the MA classes. With their thought provoking and highly enlightened classes, our students were benefited a lot. Their dedication to the profession is highly commendable. Besides in the department the college, as a whole was privileged by their presence. Mrs. Jisha Elizabeth Varghese, Mrs.Soumini, Dr.Usha T.K., Dr.Shobana Kumari were also worked as guest lecturers in the department. In the year 2010 P.G.Malayalam Course regularized. Hence the department was lead to new horizons by being appointed new faculties. Vineetha George, Shaijy C. Muringathery, Starlet Mathew and Annam Sini A.P. were appointed as Assistant professors in the year 2011.

In order to promote the PG Malayalam programme UG Malayalam Programme (Self Financing) also introduced in the year 2015.
